Hey, we’re Mitch and Justine!
We’re the recipe developers, photographers, and writers behind Broke Bank Vegan. Find out more below about how a couple of Registered Nurses from Canada turned into full-time food bloggers living abroad!

Our story
We’ve both always loved cooking and traveling to experience new cuisines, and while backpacking throughout Asia back in 2014, we had a major mindset shift about making the switch to a healthier, more compassionate lifestyle.

From there, we began sharing plant-based recipes with our close circle and loved to see the happy expressions on people’s faces as they tried our cooking (even non-vegans)!
While we both enjoyed our work as nurses, we felt the pull to share our love for cooking with a wider audience. Since we’re both specialized in areas that deal with health, nutrition, and the human body, we knew we could provide expertise throughout our food blog.

So, we decided to pack up and move to Mexico! In all honesty, things were a little shaky at times for us because we didn’t really know what we were doing. We were living off of our savings and had no idea know where to start.

But, we made a plan to work hard and learn as much as we could for at least 18 months to see what we could accomplish. Throughout the past 2 years, we’ve had many moments of laughter, tears, stress, and happiness, but we’ve built our business from zero to replacing our nursing incomes.
Blogging has become our way to pursue all of our passions in one, including health & nutrition, traveling, eating (of course), photography, and helping animals!

FAQ
Our Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees gave us a lot of experience in learning how diet affects various disease processes of the body. Throughout university and into our careers, we took a vested interest in food science and nutrition, taking additional courses whenever possible! We now apply that knowledge to all of the recipes on this site!
Absolutely not! Our recipes are for anyone looking to include more plants in their life. We believe everyone has the right to make their own dietary choices, and we just want to shed some light on how nutritious, delicious, and affordable plant-based eating can be.
We completely understand that ads can be a little annoying sometimes. But without them, we wouldn’t be able to run Broke Bank Vegan. Since the content we post is free to the public, ad revenue helps us keep the lights on. If you ever see an ad that is inappropriate or offensive, please click “Report this ad” in the bottom right of the ad and we’ll work on getting it removed.
Thanks for asking! We work really hard at developing and shooting our recipes. You are welcome to republish one photo on your website/blog/newsletter with a link back to the recipe or blog post you pulled it from. If you’d like to repost the recipe, shoot us an email to further discuss it!
If there’s something specific you’d like to see from us, or if you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to email us at [email protected] or connect with Broke Bank Vegan on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, or YouTube.
