We're Mitch and Justine, the founders of Broke Bank Vegan. We share delicious Mexican recipes with a plant-based twist. If you like meals that are cheap, quick to make, and full of flavor, you've come to the right place.
About Mitch & Justine
Growing up in Canada, one of our favorite past times was eating a wide variety of foods. Although it's hard to pinpoint a specific style of Canadian cuisine, a unique aspect of our country is how multicultural it is.
Lucky for us, there were so many different options within arms reach like Chinese, Ukrainian, Indian, Greek, Japanese, Vietnamese, and of course Mexican!
But, once we began traveling and experiencing these cuisines right in the heart of the countries they originated, we fell in love.
Whether we were eating various antojitos in Mexico City, sipping phô at tiny plastic tables in Hanoi, or cooling off after a spicy curry in Panang, we felt in awe of it all.
We were so grateful to try foods straight from the source but noticed many traditional meals tend to be meat-based. So, we started recreating these bold and unique dishes in a meatless way to share with our friends and family.
One of our all-time favorites to make and eat in Canada was of course Mexican food. Plus, having traveled to this country before, we knew moving here felt right.
We quit our jobs as registered nurses, sold all of our belongings, and flew right to the source in order to bring you Mexican food with a vegan twist!
We've had a blast and learned a ton on this journey so far. We can't wait to see what else is in store!
As we mentioned, it's our mission to celebrate the beauty of Mexican cooking while keeping it 100% plant-based.

We strive to keep our recipes as close to their roots as possible in order to showcase the real, authentic flavors of Mexico.
For this reason, we do a lot of research and experimentation before sharing our recipes. It's also why we decided to move our life here.
We want to make one thing clear — it doesn't matter if you're vegan or not, our recipes are meant for everyone to enjoy!
We have a lot of plans for Broke Bank Vegan. Since we strongly value transparency, we want to share the big-picture goals we're working towards:
- Donating part of our profits to charities we personally believe in and making this available for you to see.
- Creating our own charity to have better control over where the money is allocated.
- Showing the path we've taken to those who are interested in pursuing food blogging as a full-time career.
We will be making our traffic, income, and expense reports public so more people can understand what it takes to make blogging a full-time job.
