Ingredient notes

Grab some beans and a few seasonings, and you’re ready to make this air fryer green beans recipe! Find an ingredient breakdown and suitable substitutes below.

Green beans, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and oil.

Green beans
For this recipe, I use regular green beans. Your cooking time will vary if you use another variety, like French green beans.

Garlic
I love to keep things simple with just a pinch of garlic powder. It adds a robust, savory, and full-bodied flavor.

Substitute: You can also season your green beans with herbs and spices, like red pepper flakes, thyme, cumin, paprika, and cayenne.

Lemon
I love to add a lemon wedge or two to squeeze on my cooked beans. The tart acidity of lemon juice perfectly brings out the freshness of the green beans.

How to make

Learn the best way to make air fryer green beans with my straightforward, easy-to-follow instructions. Look for the tips in green throughout this section for consistent and successful results!

Preparation

Step 1
Wash, drain, and trim the stem end off of the green beans. I usually leave the other end intact, but it’s entirely up to you if you want to trim that end, too.

Ensure the green beans are thoroughly patted dry so the olive oil and seasonings adhere to the beans better.

Step 2
Add the beans to a mixing bowl and toss them with olive oil, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. If youโ€™re using other spices, add those now too!

Cooking

Step 1
Transfer the green beans to your air fryer basket in a single layer. Depending on the size of your basket, this recipe may take a few batches.

Be careful not to add too many green beans at a time. Overcrowding the air fryer basket can prevent proper airflow, resulting in uneven cooking.

Step 2
Cook them at 380 degrees Fahrenheit for 8-10 minutes, removing the basket halfway to toss the beans. Serve your air-fried green beans immediately as a side dish or snack with lemon wedges. Happy eating!

Expert tip

One of the most important aspects of this air fryer recipe is ensuring the green beans are completely dry before they go into the air fryer basket. Any residual moisture from washing can steam the beans inside the air fryer, preventing them from getting that perfect crispy texture.

Always pat them dry thoroughly with a kitchen towel or let them air-dry before seasoning. Secondly, don’t be shy with spacing! Overcrowding the basket will also steam the beans instead of crisping them.

Last, but certainly not least, I always recommend preheating your air fryer. Each one will have different “preheat” settings, but as a general rule of thumb, heat it for 3-5 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit or the temperature you’re air frying at.

Serving suggestions

Air-fried green beans are the perfect side to accompany hearty dishes like vegan mushroom pasta, lentil bolognese with vegan garlic bread, or vegan stuffed portobello mushrooms.

For higher-protein options, try tofu steak, lentil patties, vegan pot pie, vegan meatballs, or vegan chicken.

Cooking tips

Minimal oil for maximum crispiness: Use just enough oil to coat the green beans lightly. Excessive oil can cause the beans to become soggy rather than crisp.

Toss halfway: Remember to set a timer on or off the air fryer to remove the green beans and mix or rotate the trays at the halfway point for an even cook.

Don’t overcook: Keep a close eye on the cooking time. Overcooking green beans in the air fryer can dry them out and make them too crispy or even burnt.

Cool first: Let the green beans cool for a couple of minutes before serving them. This allows them time to crisp up.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to preheat my air fryer?

While itโ€™s not technically required, I always recommend preheating air fryers for the most consistent results and accurate cook times.

Do I need to soak green beans before cooking?

When air frying green beans, you do not need to soak them. Just wash and drain them before adding the oil and seasonings.

How long should I cook the green beans in the air fryer?

Cooking air fryer green beans in the air fryer can take anywhere between 8-12 minutes, depending on the model of the air fryer and temperature setting. Keep an eye on them starting at the 7 or 8-minute mark.

Storing & reheating

If you have leftover air-fried green beans, let them cool to room temperature before transferring them to a container for storage.

Fridge
Keep the cooled beans in an airtight container in your fridge for up to 3-4 days.

Freezer
I donโ€™t recommend freezing air-fried green beans as theyโ€™ll turn mushy once thawed.

Reheating
Add the green beans to a preheated air fryer and cook for 2-3 minutes at 380 degrees Fahrenheit. You can also heat them in the microwave for 20-30 seconds at a time, but they wonโ€™t crisp up as nicely.
